My Current Obsession: The Gap 4 in 1 Dress

When I first saw this dress in one of my emails from Gap, I immediately sent it to the trash folder but upon rediscovering it, I dug it up and couldn’t stop dreaming about the endless possibilities with this little dress. A maxi dress/skirt that could be worn 4 ways? That’s like a good pair of jeans or that awesome blazer that goes with dozens of outfits.

I don’t normally buy anything at full price from Gap -heck I don’t often even buy things when there’s a 20% or 30% off sale UNLESS that’s a discount on top of already reduced sale prices. Hey, I’m a bargain shopper. Don’t judge me!

How it Fits:

When I first ordered the black dress, I ordered it in both x-small and small petite. I wish I had taken photos before returning but for reference, I’m around 5’0-5’1. The x-small petite fit around my chest but had to be stretched a little (I’m a 32D for reference.) Because the material was stretched, I could see the sheen which I didn’t like much. Also, at full maxi dress length, the bottom of the dress hit above my ankles which I definitely didn’t like.

The small petite was perfect. The dress didn’t have that sheen at the chest and it hit right at my feet when worn at full maxi dress length. Also, I did try on the x-small and small regular in store. The x-small regular seemed to fit like the x-small petite at the chest but was about 3 inches past my feet. The small regular also fit like the small petite at the chest but was maybe 4 inches past my feet.

Ok, onto the dress itself. I absolutely love this thing! It’s on of the most versatile pieces in my closet. I can wear it as a full maxi dress, shorter long dress with the top folded over my chest and an even shorted dress with the top folded to my waist. I can also fold it down and wear it as a maxi skirt. Prior to purchasing this, I had been looking for a maxi skirt but I am so pleased with this because it doubles as a skirt and dress. I can definitely see myself living in this through the summer and fall.

How to Wear:

Solid vs. Stripe

I also want to say that I feel that the striped version runs slightly smaller than the black. It was tighter (at full maxi dress length) in the chest for me but I feel that it can be stretched out and won’t be uncomfortable.

I love the black for pretty much anything. It can be dressed up or down and to me serves as a casual version of the little black dress. It can be worn with flat sandals or flip-flops for a casual look or dressed up with accessories and heels or wedges for a night out.

The striped version is a little more fun. While it too can be dressed up or down, I’d say for me, it falls into the “daytime” category. The striped options also seem to be more popular as they’ve sold out more quickly.

Final Verdict

I say get both! But if I really had to choose, I’d go with the solid black because for my own needs, it’s more versatile. The stripes are indeed very fun though and I wouldn’t hesitate to add another to my wardrobe.

I purchased the dress maybe a week after seeing the email. I received after about 5 days and when I discovered how fantastic it was, I immediately checked the website to order another. I had wanted the gray/orange or navy/green combination with the navy/blue being a third possible option. I was amazed when I discovered that most sizes in regular, petite and tall were nearly sold out. However, my persistence paid off and about three days later, I saw a blue/navy stripe option in my size and purchased it right away (this time with 30% off.) Gap often has discount codes so check RetailMeNot for codes or if you get their emails, they usually include codes there as well. Also, sometimes their website will feature a code at the top.

I also stopped by the store hoping that someone may have returned the dress in my size but no luck. I also noticed that nearly all the colors were sold out. I could only find five dresses left in total (different colors/sizes.)

If you’re interested in purchasing the dress, definitely keep checking the website. Sizes seem to be popping up here and there. I’ve checked every few hours and that was how I was able to score the blue/navy stripe in my size. Also, may sure to check out with eBates to get a whopping 14% cashback. They will send a check to you at the end of the semester. To learn more about how eBates works, check out my detailed blog post here.

I highly recommend this dress and can’t even explain how much I love this thing. It will be perfect for summer trips (light packing) and can carry on through the seasons by simply layering up a little.

Ok I have to agree with you. I am also obsessed with this dress.

Admittedly, I didn’t see or notice this dress right away – not sure if I just blew off the ad… not sure. Admittedly, I haven’t ordered anything from the Gap in a LONG time. But when the ad resurfaced with the green/navy dress, I went into panic mode trying to find that dress. I love stripes and that color combination is one of my favorites – it is too cute… but no luck – that dress combo is COMPLETELY sold out online :(. However, I did buy the pink/navy and the orange/grey online and I wear both as maxi dresses with a blazer. LOVE, LOVE , LOVE them.) Will probably try them as skirts later….

Not to be defeated, I thought to try to call customer service to see if any other dresses were in stock via returns, etc. I got really lucky/blessed by having Renee, a customer service rep from the CA call center (near Sacramento), take my call. She is absolutely AWESOME. I told her my dilemma, my obsession to find the green/navy dress. She went out of her way to assess whether there were any in stock and whether any stores had any dresses on hand at all. We stayed on the phone easily 30 – 40 mins. She found me the navy/royal blue (in the pic above) and the navy/white (in the first pic above) from some stores in CA and OH. I bought them immediately. So in total I got 4 really cute dresses! Wore the navy/pink and the compliments won’t stop coming!! The XL options have been ideal. I got the orange in an XXL – fits a tad big but being tall allows me to take advantage of a lesser but longer fit.

Kudos to Renee in CA – definitely one of the best service reps I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She deserves a raise or at least some commission!! I tried to leave her manager a message about her great service but the voicemail needed a password :(….so hopefully she will see this and know how appreciated her time and service meant….. and kudos to both stores who offered to work with me to get me those dresses.

For the 4 in 1 dress, I say YES TO THE DRESS! This is a winner!!!!

Lucky girl! I am so happy that you were able to find so many of them. They’re a tad pricey but because they are so versatile, I think they’re definitely worth the money. These can easily be worn throughout the entire year with the use of different pairings (jackets, scarves, etc.)

The colors are great as well. I’m so jealous that you were able to snatch up the orange/gray! I absolutely adore that one. The navy/white is gorgeous as well.

I’m also glad to hear the Renee provided such great service. I’ve constantly had great service while shopping at Gap both in store and with their customer service line. I totally agree that this dress is a WINNER!

That’s so awesome! Amazing that you have every color.

Oh boy, have you seen the new floral version?

I’m somewhat tempted but need to lay off the shopping at least until I clean out my closet a little more. And thank you for the tip! I still love the orange/gray but haven’t gotten it yet.

The floral dress is so cute but so far, no luck on the sizes – this is just about sold out as well…. but I am like you in that I have to curtail the shopping or I will be living on the streets with a 4 and 1 dress on :)……Thanks for letting me know…. I will definitely keep my eyes open for this :)….
